Managing ZnO in BOF sludges
STEEL PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES
This challenge will focus on finding a way to separate the Zinc oxides from BOF sludges previous to their final dewatering. This product could be anything that is able to do this capture by physical or chemical methods. In any case, the idea is to make an “in-process” separation.
For the first of them, it could be a filter or a membrane that captures the ZnO when passing.
Another option would be to use a product that flocculates or creates a cream to separate a part of the ZnO from the sludge. If a cream is formed with Zn, for example, that part is skimmed and the rest is processed.
One of the advantages of this process is that it is not obliged to eliminate 100% of the Zn, but only a part of it so that all the BOF sludge produced in the BF can be recycled, without endangering the refractory and BF operations.
The impact on the process is reduced and it allows to valorize more sludge internally.
